One of the biggest upgrades of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to be its periscope zoom camera, which will also make this flagship the first from Apple to feature this kind of optics hardware. With the latest alleged case image leaks showing a massive rear cutout, it is rumored that the premium handset’s main camera module will be an inch larger than the module on the iPhone 14 Pro Max, suggesting a large number of internal changes.

Despite the fact that the iPhone 15 Pro Max is said to feature the same sensor size as the iPhone 14 Pro Max, a Weibo account that translates to ‘Fixed Focus Digital’ claims that the rear module of the upcoming flagship will be an inch bigger than its predecessor. Obviously, it means that existing iPhone 14 Pro Max cases will be incompatible with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, as the rear cutout will block off a small area of that triple camera array. As for why the entire back module will be an inch bigger, we may have some ideas.

Previously, we reported that the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s periscope camera would swap places with the ultrawide unit, likely due to lack of space, so that could be one reason why the rear module’s size will have to be forcefully increased. Additionally, the entire iPhone 15 lineup is said to feature a wider aperture compared to last year’s models, suggesting that even the non-Pro versions will have a bigger module when they are officially announced. The images shared by the Weibo account compares various iPhone 15 cases, and to no one’s surprise, the premium offerings have a bigger cutout.

Even with those massive rear camera modules, Apple is rumored to cram in bigger batteries for all four models this year, so we will have to see what engineering feats or sorcery the company employed to make this possible. Also, in 2024, we might witness bigger camera cutouts than the one in the images, as the iPhone 16 Pro Max is said to ship with a notable periscope zoom upgrade compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Fortunately, we have ample time to wait for that release, so we will focus on the iPhone 15 series for now.
