A Game Was Once Rejected On The Mac App Store Because Apple Reportedly Thought That The Credits Could Not Be Skipped

Mac App Store

Apple paid $60 billion to app developers in 2022 and has distributed a mammoth $320 billion ever since the company’s App Store came into existence in 2008. These figures suggest that bringing your apps to iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or other platforms can turn into a lucrative avenue for the developer.

However, there are instances where the company’s stringent rules and quality control measures often become counterproductive, as told by one game developer, who claims his title was rejected from the Mac App Store because the reviewer believed the credits could not be skipped.

The game was rejected for a second time too due to an undisclosed reason, but that was too much for the developer as they did not bother to re-submit

In case you are wondering, the game that was rejected on the Mac App Store was Untitled Goose Game. If you visit the website right now, you will notice that the game is available on multiple platforms, including Mac, but only through Steam, Itch, or the Epic Games Store, not directly from Apple’s own App Store. The reason for this is explained by Cabel Sasser, co-founder of Panic, a video games developing and app creation studio that published Untitled Goose Game.

Skipping credits could have been a simple input in a game such as this, and according to what Sasser states on Mastodon below, it appears that the developers had made way for players to skip the credits. Unfortunately, it might not have occurred to Apple when it was reviewing the app, which is the reason for the rejection in the first place.

Creator of Untitled Goose Game describes how his title got rejected by Apple

The developer submitted the app for a second time, but Sasser did not provide any reason for its rejection, but it likely would have been frustrating for him and his team to go through the grueling process and make the required changes which would have taken hours of labor to complete, only to have the app rejected again. It was understandable why Panic eventually gave up attempting to bring Untitled Goose Game to the Mac App Store, especially when the title is listed on four platforms and can also be played on any Mac.

Apple executives have stated that with the M-series of Macs, the company is focused on the gaming market, but it will take a while before a real difference can be made on this platform. However, hearing Sasser’s story makes us realize that it will become difficult for developers to find any real incentive to bring titles to the App Store if this is what they have to deal with consistently.
