iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max Go Official With Grade 5 Titanium, New Customizable Action Button, Cutting-Edge 3nm A17 Pro SoC, More
A torrent of reports, leaks, and rumors surrounding the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max started last year, with the two flagships finally materializing today. Apple has lifted the veil of its latest premium offerings, and compared to the previous launches, these two tout some of the biggest changes, both internally and externally, so let us get into the details.
iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max ditch stainless to switch to titanium, but aluminum also makes a return to the chassis
The consistent reports talking about Apple ditching stainless steel and switching to titanium alloy ended up being true for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, as now, the company claims that both models are the lightest ever, with the Grade 5 titanium being the same alloy used on the Mars rover.
However, in case our readers did not know, titanium is susceptible to scratches because it is a soft material, so Apple has mitigated this weakness with PVD coating, along with aluminum being thermally bonded to it. Additionally, Apple claims that the latest models are more repairable, with the glass said to be easier to replace, though we will leave it to the teardown experts to do their usual thing and give an impartial verdict.
New Action button replaces the mute switch, here is what it can do
Another change the rumors got right was Apple getting rid of the mute switch and adding an Action button. Given that both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max feature the same 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED screen but with slimmer bezels, this button brings an extra layer of functionality. But default, the Action button is a ring or silent switch, but it can be customized by the user. It includes haptic feedback, so you can assign app-specific features or shortcuts. In addition, using it a camera launcher and shutter button is also supported.
The all-new re-branded A17 Pro, the first 3nm SoC found in phones
Apple is no longer using the ‘Bionic’ moniker with its top-tier silicon, likely because the A16 Bionic is used for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, so to reduce confusion amongst buyers, it has decided to use the A17 Pro for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. It is the world’s first 3nm SoC and uses the same 6-core CPU configuration as past chipset releases that include two high-performance cores and six power-efficiency ones. However, the new architecture ensures that the A17 Pro delivers a 300 percent improvement in performance-per-watt.
There is also a USB 3 controller that allows the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to deliver 10Gbps of bandwidth through the USB-C port. While those speeds are nowhere close to Thunderbolt territory, it is still a major improvement. Also, for the first time, Apple has added ray tracing support to the A17 Pro’s 6-core GPU, though it was supposed to debut on the A16 Bionic, but the company’s engineers ran into a bevy of problems such as high power draw and overheating.
Camera specifications: iPhone 15 Pro Max gets an exclusive telephoto camera upgrade
Both flagships feature a 48MP main sensor that is bigger than the one present in the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, with users now having the ability to capture 48MP HEIF and 48MP ProRaw. At default, the camera system now supports the new super-high-resolution at a resolution of 24MP, with the iPhone 15 Pro supporting up to a 3x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max takes it one step further with a 5x optical zoom.
There is also significantly improved hardware stabilization that reduces camera shake considerably. The new models get a new feature that was not present on previous handsets; recording to external drives or computers.
Colors, pricing, and availability
The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will be available in four new finishes that include black titanium, white titanium, blue titanium, and natural titanium. Pre-orders start on Friday, September 15, with availability beginning Friday, September 22.
As for the pricing, the iPhone 15 Pro starts from $999, just like the iPhone 14 Pro, with users getting 128GB of internal memory. As for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, it is the only member from the entire lineup to be more expensive than last year’s model, starting from $1,199, but also giving you 256GB of storage for the base version.
