Supply Chain Potentially The Reason Why Apple Delayed The Launch of Vision Pro as it Aims Drastic Production Cuts

Apple Vision Pro Production Cuts ahead of launch

Apple announced the Vision Pro headset at its WWDC 2023 event but set the launch date for early next year, It was previously speculated that Apple requires time so developers can test and develop applications and use cases for the headset. However, the delayed launch is due to supply chain issues rather than a developer-centric approach. A new report suggests that Apple is aiming to cut down production further due to the complex design of the Vision Pro.

Due to the complex design of Apple's Vision Pro headset, the company is planning to cut production further, down to 400,000 units a year

A new report from The Financial Times suggests that Apple is planning 'drastic' production costs for the Vision Pro, reducing the numbers further. It was previously speculated that the company will produce a million units of the Vision Pro a year but it seems the numbers have been further reduced due to various complications in the supply chain department.

The report suggests that the main reason for the production cut is the design of the Vision Pro. The headset features a display for external use as well as dual 4K micro-LED screens on the inside. This makes the production process increasingly difficult for mass production. Ultimately, the production has to be cut to meet the quality of the devices as it requires more time. From a million units per year, the company is now expected to offer only 400,000 units of Vision Pro next year.

The complex design of Vision Pro also includes numerous sensors and cameras that make the magic happen. The cameras are carefully calibrated so users can experience augmented reality as Apple showcased on stage last month. Luxshare, Apple's manufacturing partner for the Vision Pro, needs to reevaluate the production process in order to bring the numbers up.

Other than this, since the production capacity is low, we might have to wait a little longer for the budget variants of the Vision Pro. Luxshare's stock fell after the news surrounding the production cut of the Vision Pro. The headset is the first product that Apple launched after the Apple Watch in 2015 and it will take time for suppliers to cater to the new production processes.

As mentioned earlier, Apple's Vision Pro headset will be available to buy early next year and if you are lucky enough to get your hands on one, it will cost a whipping $3,499. Developers are currently testing VisionOS and devising appropriate use cases and applications.
