Apple GPT Reportedly Being Tested As Company Aims To Compete With OpenAI, Google, New Framework Developed Too

Apple reportedly developing Apple GPT

After Apple restricted employees from using ChatGPT out of fear that engaging with the Large Language Model would leak information about the company’s future products, the California-based firm is reportedly working on Apple GPT and has a framework in place that will allow the development of LLMs.

New report states that work on Apple GPT may have started, but company is yet to have a clear strategy on how the technology will work for consumers

Apple has developed the ‘Ajax’ framework, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reporting that AI has become a top priority for the company as it aims to obtain a lead against entities like OpenAI and Google. The framework will be used to develop large language models similar to ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing, with the company’s engineers referring to their in-house chatbot as Apple GPT. Though the product is in the works, Gurman claims that Apple does not have a ‘clear strategy’ on what the program will do for consumers.

Initially, Apple considered partnering with OpenAI and also tested the company’s technology for corporate teams. However, both firms could not reach an agreement. The Ajax framework is built on Google’s Jax machine learning framework, which runs on Google Cloud, and several teams are working on artificial intelligence to help improve existing services such as Siri. Those who own iPhones, iPads, or Macs, will know that the voice assistant lags behind the likes of Google Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, and others.

The introduction of Apple GPT may improve Siri, but with no information on when Apple will launch the chatbot or how it will function, we cannot comment on something that is this early. Also, Apple’s rumored push towards developing a ChatGPT competitor may have some investor pressure behind it because, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, those investors believed that the company was allocating too many resources towards its AR headset, the Vision Pro, instead of focusing on building a capable chatbot.

We may see a preview of Apple GPT next year at WWDC 2024 since the remaining keynotes for this year will only be focused on hardware launches and official software releases.
