In another instance where the Apple Watch assisted or aided the wearer in helping them seek medical attention, a 29-year-old was awoken from her nap when the smartwatch kept on sending alerts, attempting to gain her attention of a high heart rate of 178 beats per minute. After careful examination by a health professional, the person found out that she had a potentially deadly blood clot, which would have been life-threatening had she not received medical attention at the right time.

Woman’s physician told her that there was a 50 percent survival rate for the condition that she was informed about through her Apple Watch

Kimmie Watkins, a resident of Cincinnati, was feeling lightheaded and dizzy and believed it was due to her chomping down on excessive food. While she thought that a nap would relieve her of this minor affliction, the Apple Watch started sending her alerts of a high heart rate. Watkins said that she kept on receiving alerts for 10 minutes, so she decided to seek medical attention, which was the prudent decision.

Speaking to her physician, the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine cardiologist Dr. Richard Becker informed Watkins that it was a saddle pulmonary embolism and, according to the medical professional, it was the most severe and life-threatening blood clot, with a 50 percent survival rate. According to AppleInsider, Watkins was not aware of any history of health-related problems, so after finding out about this discovery, she is taking the road to recovery, improving her stamina, and employing the use of blood thinners.

“Part of me sees wearables as part of that movement of health. It might be seen as staying too connected or something, but I think it can be helpful in a health sense, and not just in a connect to people sense.”

Watkins now wears her Apple Watch with pride and hopes that her ‘scary’ experience will encourage others to treat their health seriously while paying more attention to the alerts the wearable sends her and others. In related news, Nate Gorby used his Apple Watch and Fitness+ to lose 100 lbs in weight, successfully combating his health issues, so there is a ton of positivity through the use of these smartwatches.
