WhatsApp Could Soon Let You Choose a Username So You Can Keep Your Phone Number Private

As compared to its contemporaries, WhatsApp is pretty modest when adding new features, and it makes sense, too. Rather than adding a whole host of half-baked features all at once, the Meta-owned platform takes its time and introduces one feature at a time, and the recently spotted feature gives us a hint that you could soon avoid sharing your phone number if someone wants to add you in their contacts.

Now, the latest feature, spotted by WABetaInfo, suggests that WhatsApp is currently testing a feature allowing users to have unique usernames for their accounts. This means that users will actually be able to search each other using their usernames instead of phone numbers, something that does not sit well with a lot of other people. This is not going to be the first time we'll see this feature, as it is already available on some other platforms.

It is worth noting that the feature is currently in development, and it could take some time before we finally see it rolling out to the masses, but I am really glad that WhatsApp is working on this feature as it would make it even simpler for people to share content with each other.

 

As you can see in the screenshot above, WhatsApp actually will let you choose a unique username. We don't exactly know how this will work, but it is more than safe to assume that you will be able to give your username to other people and have them add you instead of actually going ahead and sharing your number with them.

WhatsApp has been steadily adding a number of features over the past couple of months. Only recently, the company started rolling out an update that lets you edit your messages, then there is also the feature that lets you lock individual chats, and there are several other features in work too.
