A rare $40,000 Sealed Original iPhone unboxed and lost most of its value
The auction was won by Marques Brownlee or MKBHD on YouTube, who got the original iPHone for a whopping $40,000. He stated that he could have bought camera gear instead but with a unanimous decision from the team, it was decided that the money will be spent on an original iPhone. He goes on to share that original iPhones from 2007 are very rare and that it is very hard to confirm their authenticity.
Many YouTubers have been scammed in the past who received repacked or faulty iPhone models. Scammers take advantage of the rare product as its price has gone up by a lot and is now considered a vintage product. Mostly, scammers who sell sealed original iPhone models use an online medium like Amazon or eBay. However, this was not the case with MKBHD. The auction confirmed the authenticity of the device through X-Rays and other means, thereby making sure that the original iPhone was indeed genuine.
MKBHD also explained how the auction worked and how he managed to secure the device. You can check out the full video below for more details. The original iPhone with a "Lucky You" sticker arrives in a gigantic wooden box, potentially for safety purposes. Marques had to un-drill the box to take the small iPhone box out. The thing that makes it a rare original iPhone is the "Lucky You" sticker over the box. Additionally, this specific model does not have an App Store on it as it was released later on. Furthermore, it also lacked the functionality to set a wallpaper.
Upon unboxing, it was showcased that the original iPhone was in fact factory-sealed and brand new. You get all the mandatory paperwork and skewed Apple stickers. Additionally, you also get a microfiber cloth with "iPhone" written on it. Apple also used to add wired earbuds along with a charger in the box, something that we can only imagine nowadays. Take note that the auctioned iPhone lost most of its value after it was unboxed and we are glad someone did it. This is all there is to it, folks. Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
