Two AirTags Were Cleverly Hidden In A Stolen Family Vehicle, Allowing The Police To Track Its Location Just After An Hour
Tracking down your stolen possessions has become a little less painful thanks to the existence of AirTags, but it also helps that owners are one step ahead of criminals by employing some quick thinking. On this occasion, a family had their car stolen by a thief but had placed two trackers in the vehicle to help the authorities locate its position much faster.
Thief threw one of the two AirTags after finding it, but the family cleverly hid the one other away in the car
The Setter family in Southeast D.C. were unloading their groceries when they were surprised by a red car pulling up to them. One of the thieves approached them with a firearm and demanded that they give up their car, which was a BMW SUV. The accomplice also managed to escape in the red car. Thankfully, Sean Setter remembered to place two AirTags in the now stolen car, with both trackers logged with his wife’s phone, allowing them to track the car’s location.
“We had two AirTags, one on the key ring and one hidden in the car. Luckily the AirTags were logged with my wife’s phone and she was able to show that to the police and they were able to pinpoint where the car was going and locate it.”
One of the AirTags had a keyring in the car, along with the husband’s iPhone also present in it. The thief threw out both items but did not locate the other tracker, which was used by the police to pinpoint its location. Surprisingly, finding the stolen car took around an hour, revealing how helpful these AirTags are. Unfortunately, according to AppleInsider, an insurance company stated that the car was totaled, absorbing tremendous damage in such a short time.
The vehicle also sustained a bullet hole during a shootout, but luckily for the Setter family, they received a replacement BMV SUV after a while. Police also made an arrest on the case just a day after the theft took place. One decision that we should commend the Setter family on is that they involved the law enforcement authorities almost immediately after the incident took. There have been past occasions where owners tracked down their stolen property, and they paid the price for their carelessness.
The Setter family was also clever enough as they placed two AirTags instead of one in the car, otherwise, it may have been difficult to retrieve. Combine that with Apple’s extensive Find My network, and you have a blessing in the palm of your hands when it comes to locating missing or stolen items.
