The Mac Studio Was Not an Interim Product for Mac Pro as Apple Plans to Launch Two Upgraded Models
Apple launched the Mac Studio at its Spring event last year with a design that looks pretty similar to the Mac mini. The machine was powered by Apple's M1 Ultra and M1 Max chips which were significantly more powerful than any Mac. With the M1 Ultra chip, the machine was questioned to replace the rumored Apple Silicon Mac Pro. The Mac Studio was not an interim product that could fill the gap until Apple introduced the Apple Silicon Mac Pro. Mark Gurman states in a new report that the company is working on two new upgraded models of the Mac Studio which will be launched in the near future.
Apple to launch two new variants of the Mac Studio with upgraded internals, launch time frame unclear
Mark Gurman stated in his latest edition of the Power On newsletter that the company is working on "two Mac Studio follow-ups" with upgraded internals which will launch in the near future. The original model was powered by Apple's most powerful SoC, the M1 Ultra which is the fastest chip on a Mac. The company did not release an updated version of the Mac Studio with an M2 series of chips as of yet. Apple did not host a Spring event this year which means the device could have missed its due update. If the news has any heft to it, we might see two new models of the Mac Studio in the near future.
Mark Gurman speculates that Apple is working on two new models of the Mac Studio but no details were provided on the launch. Additionally, no details related to the specifications and design were shared by the analyst as well. Since Apple missed the launch this year, we might see the upgraded models launch next year with comparatively powerful chips against the M1 Max and M1 Ultra. If Apple plans to launch the new models before the release of the M3 chips, the upgraded models could feature M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. However, if Apple plans to launch the devices next year, we could see the new models boasting the M3 Max and M3 Ultra chips.
Apple has not yet transitioned fully to its custom silicon. The Mac Pro was rumored to incorporate an M2 Ultra chip with performance levels on par with the Mac Studio. This would basically cannibalize the more expensive product out of the two. Henceforth, it is unclear how Apple plans to position the two computers and what differentiating elements it would bring to the table.
This is all there is to it, folks. We will share more details as soon as further information is available. When do you think Apple will launch its highly-anticipated Mac Pro with Apple Silicon? Let us know in the comments.
