Firmament, the Latest Game from the Makers of Myst, Finally Has a Release Date
Ready for a dose of old-school, laid-back adventure gaming? Well, you’re in luck, as Firmament, the new game from Cyan, creators of classics like Myst, Riven, and Obduction, finally has a release date. Firmament was first announced all the way back in 2018, with Cyan launching a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $1.4 million dollars. Since then, progress on the new adventure has been slow, but it seems the project has finally come to fruition, as Cyan has dropped a launch trailer for Firmament. You can check it out for yourself, below.
Looking fairly promising, particularly considering the game’s somewhat limited indie budget. For those who haven’t been keeping up with Firmament, it’s very much in the same vein as past Cyan titles like Myst, as you explore a mysterious island, uncovering hints about its backstory as you go. That said, this time around, there’s more of uniform approach to puzzle solving, as you’ll use a special device called the “Adjunct” that will let you interface with various parts of the environment. Here is Cyan’s official description for Firmament…
“Firmament is a steampunk visual feast with thrilling new sights to see around every corner, which can be seen in both standard screen and VR. Explore three Realms of Firmament, each with secrets and mysteries to reveal, in this puzzle adventure featuring deep storytelling and rich world-building. What purpose do these seemingly abandoned Realms serve? What are the giant, mysterious machines scattered throughout the world? And can you trust the apparition who accompanies you on your journey?”
As mentioned above, one of the key features of Firmament is VR, with support for SteamVR, Meta Quest, PS VR2, and more. That said, you don’t need to play in VR, if you want to have a good, old-fashioned mouse-and-keyboard Myst experience.
Firmament arrives on PC (including SteamVR, Meta Quest, and Vive), PS4, and PS5 (including PS VR2) on May 18. What do you think? Ready to tax your brain on yet another mysterious island? Or are you over the whole Myst formula?
