Arm Planning To Make Its Own Chips For Mobiles & Laptops Using Intel’s Fabs

Arm, a widely known name in the tech industry, is planning to make chips for various products including mobiles and laptops, by itself.

In a report by Reuters (via Financial Times), it is reported that chip giant, Arm, has proposed to design and build its next-generation chips by itself. For this purpose, the chipmaker has brought forward a new team of engineers as part of its "solutions engineering" group which will not only lead the development of the next-generation solutions but will also be creating brand new IPs on the Arm chip architecture.

One of the first products from Arm's new engineering group is still said to be in the prototype stage but is said to be far more advanced than ever before according to what industry executives had to say. It is also mentioned that Arm doesn't intend to sell or license the prototype chip but that may change once the chip gets out of the prototype stage and enters qualification sampling. For now, it looks like the company is going to remain a supplier of IP to other chipmakers until it finalizes its own chip.

It is also likely that Intel might be the one producing the chips for Arm using its own Fabs. The blue team recently revealed that they will work with Arm to produce mobile-focused & other chips with Arm's architecture inside its factories. Intel has also been open to working with NVIDIA and AMD in producing their chips at its Fabs. Intel has predominantly been an x86 chipmaker so having chips with Arm architecture produced at its Fabs will be an interesting sight for sure.

Intel and Arm also recently signed a deal to manufacture the next-gen mobile SOCs using its 18A process node. The Intel 18A process node isn't expected to go into a full-fledged production cycle till 2024-2025 and the company is likely to use the process for its own products before moving it to other customers. So we can expect those Arm products to hit shelves only after 2025.

The SOCs will utilize a new Arm architecture designed from the ground up by the new team and is going to target mobiles and laptops first. The company may announce further details on its chip-making plans later this year along with a list of devices it will be targeting.
