Samsung's 3rd-generation 4nm process

Samsung could take back some of its lost customers by commencing mass production of third-generation 4nm chips from the first half of 2023, according to the latest report. One of the biggest issues that the Korean giant was apparently experiencing was increasing its yield rate, and based on the latest information at hand, the company appears to have addressed that obstacle.

A new report published on Business Korea states that Samsung’s 4nm process will be based on the 2.3-generation process. Though a specific launch timeline has not been mentioned, mass production is expected to kick off in the first half of this year. Thanks to the arrival of this report, we can provide an educated guess as to which companies would take advantage of this technology. Google, who has shown to be a long-term Samsung customer, will likely design the Tensor G3 on the third-generation 4nm process.

Unfortunately, there is no telling if Qualcomm and MediaTek will return to the Korean giant’s foundry. Given that the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is rumored to be made on the same TSMC 4nm process as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Samsung has the opportunity to showcase the improvements made to its own node. In fact, the firm reportedly had products that delivered on that promise of increased performance, lowered power consumption, and smaller die area.

Sadly, Samsung would experience immense trouble in improving its yield, eventually losing its biggest customer, Qualcomm, to TSMC. Fortunately, those yields have reportedly improved to 60 percent, according to industry insiders’ estimates. However, even with those improvements, Samsung trails behind TSMC, a manufacturer with a yield rate in the 70-80 percent range.

Also, apart from Apple, no other customer has appeared to show interest in TSMC’s 3nm process yet, likely due to the massive premium that needs to be paid for using that cutting-edge technology. As such, the refinements made to Samsung’s third-generation 4nm node presents a new opportunity, as many clients will flock to see it in action, so we will see what efforts the company takes to capitalize on that.
