AMD’s Powerful New RDNA3 Based Phoenix iGPU ‘Radeon 780M’ As Powerful As An NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti

The AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS is one of the most anxiously anticipated APUs for tech enthusiasts and for good reason: it features an incredibly powerful iGPU. Just a few years ago, integrated GPUs used to be weak and could barely run any games and now AMD will be rolling out an iGPU that is just under the performance level of a full blown NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti. Combined with FSR 2.0+ it will more or less eliminate the need for entry level discrete graphics.

AMD's new integrated GPUs are almost as powerful as the GTX 1650 Ti

This recent leak comes from Moores Law is Dead although we took some information from Videocardz as well. In this leak, the Radeon 780M (which is the name of the integrated GPU on the 7940HS) scores 289X points with a graphics score of 259X points in Time Spy. The AMD Radeon 780M has 12 CUs and will be clocked at either 2.8GHz, 2.7GHz or 2.6GHz.

We have seen this score before as well and this is clearly the 25W variant. The higher powered variant which consumes around 54W scores much closer to the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Ti (or the RTX 2050 depending on how you want to see it). WhyCry has confirmed that these GPUs will not be reaching the 3.0 GHz+ clocks usually seen with AMD's other RDNA3 series and that is probably because they want to conserve the thermal and power envelope of the APU.

The AMD's Ryzen 7040 "Phoenix" APUs will launch later this quarter in various flavors and laptop options. Additionally, these chips are expected to retain all of their Radeon-exclusive features such as raytracing, FSR, RSR, and other tech support when the laptops hit shelves in March this year. They will be manufactured on the 4nm process and utilize the Zen 4 architecture. This is going to be the ultimate flagship of mobility processors from AMD and should make for one beast of a laptop.
