Silicon Motion Preps PCIe Gen5 “SM2504XT” SSD Controller, 7nm & Aiming The Mainstream In Q4 2023

Silicon Motion is working on a brand new PCIe Gen5 SSD controller which is purely designed for the mainstream consumer segment.

Silicon Motion Roadmap Reveals High-End PCIe Gen5 SSDs This Quarter, Mainstream Products In Q4 2023

According to an internal roadmap, it looks like Silicon Motion has two PCIe Gen5 SSD controllers aimed at the consumer segment and two aimed at the enterprise side. The enterprise controllers include the MonTitan SM8366 and the MonTitan SM8308 which were announced last year but we also know about the SM2508 & SM2504 controllers which are headed out this year.

As per the company's roadmap, the Silicon Motion SM2508 will utilize the 12FFC (12nm FinFET) process node and come in the new NVMe 2.0 standard design with 8-channel support, onboard DDR4-3200 memory with support for LDPC+E2E+SRAM ECC & the first engineering samples are already out since January 2023. SSDs using the SM2508 Gen5 controller will be positioned in the performance segment and are meant to launch later this quarter.

For the mainstream parts, Silicon Motion has the SM2504XT controller which is also based on the PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe 2.0 standard but features 4-channel memory support with DDR4-3600 & also makes use of a 7nm process node. Unlike the high-end SSDs which are shipping early on, it looks like mainstream SSDs won't be available for some time and will only start popping up around the second half of 2023.

So far, there aren't a whole lot of PCIe Gen5 SSD options available in the market. The only option that is available is the CFD Gaming SSDs which are only available in Japan. Besides that, no major manufacturer has introduced Gen5 solutions. The first devices were mostly going to rely on the Phison E26 controller and while others are also working on their own Gen5 high-end/mainstream controllers, we have yet to see any product in the market. Hopefully, that changes soon as PCIe Gen5 SSDs were heavily marketed by board makers for the most recent AMD & Intel platforms.
