AMD EPYC 9654 ES 96-Core CPU Is As Fast As A LN2-Overclocked Threadripper 5995WX In Cinebench

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 'Storm Peak' CPU Featuring 96 Zen 4 Cores & 480 MB Cache Spotted 2

AMD's EPYC Genoa CPUs have been launched for servers but we have a new benchmark of the EPYC 9654 which gives us a taste of the next-gen Threadripper 7000 lineup.

AMD's EPYC 9654 ES CPU Scores An Impressive 115K Points In Cinebench At Stock, As Fast As A LN2 Cooled Threadripper 5995WX

The AMD EPYC 9654 CPU is no mystery, in fact, the chip has been shipping to servers for several months now. The chip is part of the AMD Genoa family which falls under the EPYC 9004 branding and makes use of the Zen 4 core architecture. These chiplet-powered CPUs house up to 96 cores & 192 threads along with huge pools of cache, 486 MB total on this particular sample.

As for the AMD EPYC 9654 itself, the CPU is the flagship and features the maximum core count for the SP5 family so far. The final chip has a boost clock of up to 3.8 GHz across a single-core and 3.5 GHz across all cores while having a default TDP of 360W which can be configured up to 400 Watts. But the chip here is a QS/ES sample and runs at lower clock speeds of 2.15 GHz base and 3.5 GHz boost but according to Twitter fellow, Hoang Anh Phu, it looks like the QS/ES chips do offer support for overclocking.

Furthermore, the sample discovered by HXL (@9550pro) was running 768 GB of DDR5-5600 system memory compared to the official spec that only allows up to DDR5-4800 speeds. But enough of the specs, it's time we talk about the benchmarks. The AMD EPYC 9654 CPU was tested in Cinebench & at its default state, it scored huge with 115,315 points going in its bag. This is on par with the fastest overclocked result of the Threadripper 5995WX chip under LN2 cooling which is reported at 116142 points.

While the EPYC 9654 has 50% more cores, those cores are not boosting as high as the AMD Threadripper part. Furthermore, the all-core boost clock seems to be much lower than 3.5 GHz and that can be seen in the task manager window where only two cores are shown to be working at 100 percent.

This is very impressive for an ES/QS chip and it looks like AMD's next-gen Threadripper is going to be an absolute monster of a processor for workstations when it launches. The Threadripper 7000 family has already been confirmed and if these numbers are anything to go by, we can see up to 150K or higher points for those chips when they launch.

The Threaddripper 7000 CPUs will retain the same Zen 4 chiplet design as the EPYC 9004 "Genoa" lineup and will tackle Intel's workstation "Sapphire Rapids" family which was recently unveiled. The AMD lineup is expected to launch in the second half of 2023 but nothing's set in stone for now.
